The 2002 Sunderland Council election took place on 2 May 2002 to elect members of Sunderland Metropolitan Borough Council in Tyne and Wear, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Labour party stayed in overall control of the council.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 Sunderland )〕 After the election, the composition of the council was *Labour 62 *Conservative 11 *Liberal Democrat 1 *Liberal 1 ==Campaign== 66 candidates contested the 25 seats that were available in the election.
